DO
- search for information on the town/city you will be staying in to find out what cultural and social events it has to offer
- address people you have just met by “você” (formal) and older people by Sr. (Senhor) or Sra. (Senhora) / D. (Dona), to show respect
- address friends by “tu” (informal)
- greet people with a hand-shake or two kisses on the cheek
- enroll at a local student association / sports club, a good way to meet new people and make friends
- bring food and drink to a party or gathering
DON´T
- smoke in closed public areas (cafés, restaurants, bars, night clubs, schools, places of leisure, public service offices, etc.) except when expressly stated that it is permitted (by a blue sign)
- forget that nightlife starts quite late
