HUNGARY | Accomodation | General information

General (student) housing condition

Accommodation in Hungary is less expensive than in Western European countries - you can find a small furnished flat for 200 euros per month. Prices depend on region, location and quality.

The highest rents are in Budapest and in big cities (especially where there is a university). It can be difficult to find accommodation in the northwestern part of Hungary, which is the most developed region of the country. There is also a big difference in rents in the centre of the city and its suburbs. You don’t have to worry about the distance because the local transport is relatively reliable. The quality and the equipment of the flats can also be very different. Furnished flats usually have a fridge, cooker (gas or electric), dishes and cutlery; but a washing machine or a dishwasher are not common.

Types of accommodation

When seeking accommodation in Hungary as a student, the following options can be considered:

  • A student hostel
  • Flat sharing
  • Renting a flat
  • A hotel

Finding an accommodation

Most of the universities in Hungary have student hostels. You can find information on these hostels on university websites. Student hostels are not very comfortable, you have to share the room with other people, and there is a common kitchen and bathroom for several rooms. However, student hostels are the most popular type of accomodation because of their prices. Depending on the quality you have to pay 8,000-15,000 forints per month (30-60 euros). It is recommended to apply for a room as early as possible, because in September, when students return to the university, it is difficult to find a room. The following website provides information on Hungarian student hostels:

You can look for a flat to rent through an estate agency or you can do it by yourself. In this case check the latest newspaper advertisement section and browse different websites. A good starting point is

In Budapest you have to pay at least 50,000 forint a month for a flat of acceptable quality. In other cities the rent is cheaper and the prices vary according to the distance from the university or city centre. In order to reduce expenses students often choose flat sharing. To find a room in a shared flat, search the bulletin boards at the university.

Hotels are usually the most expensive form of accomodation, but it is not impossible to find a room in a modest hotel for a reasonable amount especially in the case of long-term stay. In a hotel room you cannot cook but you have a private bathroom and toilet and the cleaning is arranged by the staff. You can start browsing at the following website:
