ITALY | Internship: At work | Dress code and manners
Dress codes depend on the placement.
According to Italian business protocol, personal and professional titles are used in both casual conversation and formal writing: the title of “Dottore” is given to a male university graduate, while the female equivalent is “Dottoressa”.
In many large multinationals, however, practice of using first names has become the norm. In any case, it's better to wait until you are invited before using first names.
It is important to know that in Italy you say “Pronto” when answering the phone. In the workplace, phones are usually answered by saying the name of the company and “Buongiorno” or “Buonasera”.
When you talk about the time, you can use either the 12 or 24 hour designation. You can say, for instance, 4.00 in the afternoon or 16.00, 12.00 or mezzogiorno (noon) , 24.00 or mezzanotte (midnight) .
