General (student) housing conditions
In Sweden accommodation prices depending on region, location and quality. Finding accommodation in September or January when students return to the university can be difficult.
Types of accommodation
The following are the main types of rented accommodation:
- Student apartment
- Student dormitory
- An ordinary apartment
- Hostels
- Rent a room in a house with a family
Finding accommodation
If you have not arranged your accommodation in advance it's advisable that you contact a nearby university and also look at the student notice boards and community notice boards in local supermarkets. There are several matters you should consider before you begin your search for accommodation:
- Do you wish to live alone, share with others, or live with an Swedish family?
- What is your budget?
- Do you wish to live within easy reach of your place of work?
You can also ask your placement tutor or office to put you in touch with either last year's placement students to that city or a placement student currently out there. Not only will they be a valuable source of information, but they may even be vacating their accommodation at a time that would suit you to take on their tenancy, saving you both time and effort
Some key questions
The following questions are important to ask when you have found an accommodation.
- Is the apartment/house in a student area?
- Will you be living far from your place of work and what is the public transport like?
- Does the present furniture come with the apartment/house?
- Is the rent including electricity?
- Is the rent including water?
