DO
- find out how to address people
- always use the formal way of addressing people when you first meet them
- shake hands when meeting people
- take the initiative at work and be keen to do your job well
- get information about dress codes and working hours at the company or office you want to work for
- ask and consult. It is better to ask a hundred times than to make one mistake
- learn Hungarian, it is an obvious advantage when applying in Hungary
- try to learn some words of Hungarian because that shows your interest and it is much appreciated by Hungarians
- try to demonstrate some knowledge of Hungarian history and culture
- keep in mind that the job interviews are the most important part of the application procedure
- be polite and moderate
- dress neatly and conservatively for the job interview
- address people by their last names and titles
- use your contacts when you are looking for a job
- let the Hungarians get you to know a little bit, be willing to spend some time for small talk with your business partners
- look interested during the interview and do not be afraid to ask questions
DON’T
- make private phone calls or surf on the Internet during working hours
- use informal dress when meeting the public
- address people by their first names until you are told to do so
- sit down until invited at an application interview
- forget to shake hands with everybody when entering or leaving the meeting
- use friendly backslapping or other physical contact at work
- use the “sell yourself” approach during an interview
- forget to bring copies of your diplomas and references to the interview
- criticize former employers
- go over the top – stay calm and stick to the facts
- be late for appointments. Arrive rather five minute too early
