Student: Hello, I want to open an account please.
Bank service: No problem, do you have any photographic ID?
Student: I am in Ireland on placement working for a company and I have my passport here.
Bank service: Good, we need your passport, if you want to open an account.
Student: Is there anything else I need?
Bank service: Yes, as you are working here we need a letter from The Revenue or the Social Welfare addressed to you with your PPS number.
Student: Pardon? I did not catch all that. Can you repeat that a bit slower please?
Bank service: Sorry. Your Irish employer should have registered you with the tax authorities and the Pay Related Social Insurance scheme here in Ireland. Or you may have done that yourself. They should have sent you a letter with your PPS number, your Public Personal Service number which you quote in all official correspondence.
Student: OK. I will check that out.
Bank service: Listen, if you can produce an utility bill sent to your Irish address that will do too, for example an electricity bill, a phone bill, a television license or a waste disposal bill. But maybe you have not been in Ireland long enough to have got one of these.
Student: OK. I understand. Thanks for all your help!

Student: I want to open an account. I was here earlier and did not have all the documents.
Bank service: OK. What have you for me?
Student: I have my passport and a letter from the tax authorities with my PPS number to show I am registered. I also have a few utility bills showing my Irish address.
Bank service: That is fine. If you just fill in this form, I will get you an account number and you can open your account. If you want your salary paid by direct debit into your account you just tell your employer your account number.
Student: Can I also get other direct debits or standing orders paid out of my account?
Bank service: Of course, that is no problem once you have an account with us just fill in a form telling the bank what direct debits or standing orders you want paid out and at what intervals.
